Romans 8:2 — “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
There are two laws at work in this world—and in your walk.
The first is the law of sin and death. It’s the spiritual gravity we were all born under. You don’t have to rebel or shake a fist at God to be under it—just stay as you are. Be yourself. Live by your own understanding. Even your best attempts to be good, to be kind, to be religious—if done in the flesh—are still tangled in a law that leads only to death. It’s what Paul called “another law in my members... bringing me into captivity” (Romans 7:23).
But there's another law. A higher one. A liberating one.
It’s the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. This law doesn’t rest on your strength, performance, or discipline. It flows from the life of Christ in you. The Holy Spirit empowers it, the Word of God reveals it, and faith activates it. It begins the moment you believe, but it grows stronger as you renew your mind with truth.
You don’t switch from one law to the other through effort—but by faith that rests in truth. Romans chapters 5–8 lay out this new identity:
You are dead to sin (Romans 6:2)
You are not under law, but under grace (Romans 6:14)
You are alive unto God (Romans 6:11)
You are in Christ, and Christ is in you (Romans 8:1, 10)
And yet, even as a saved believer, if you walk according to the flesh—thinking in the old way, acting in your own strength—you will experience confusion, defeat, and stagnation. That’s not your standing before God, but your condition here and now.
“To be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6
So today, don’t strive. Don’t perform. Instead—learn. Renew your mind in God’s Word. Believe what it says about who you are. Let truth reorder your thoughts, your motives, your habits.
The law of the Spirit of life will work in you—but only as you yield your mind and will to the Word of God. The fruit is unmistakable: peace, power, holiness, and deep assurance that you are His.
