Notice that he does not issue a rigid legal command; rather, he beseeches us by the mercies of God. Having detailed eleven chapters of foundational doctrine concerning our justification and secure standing in Christ, Paul now highlights the natural response to such overwhelming favour. Under the law, animal sacrifices were slain upon an altar. In stark contrast, the grace of God calls for a living sacrifice. We are urged to yield our physical bodies actively to the Lord day by day.
