Romans 12 (Part 1): Living Sacrifice

Passage: Rom.12:1

Scripture Focus:

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." (Rom.12:1)

Today's Lesson

The Apostle Paul opens this practical section by appealing directly to saved believers on the basis of divine grace. Notice that he does not issue a rigid legal command; rather, he beseeches us by the mercies of God. Having detailed eleven chapters of foundational doctrine concerning our justification and secure standing in Christ, Paul now highlights the natural response to such overwhelming favour.

Under the law, animal sacrifices were slain upon an altar. In stark contrast, the grace of God calls for a living sacrifice. We are urged to yield our physical bodies actively to the Lord day by day. This presentation is not an attempt to earn salvation or secure favour, as the believer is already accepted in the Beloved. Instead, presenting our members to Him is described as our reasonable service.

It is logical and fitting for a believer who has received infinite mercy to yield their life back to the Redeemer. Because we are cleansed by the blood of Christ, our dedicated bodies are viewed by God as holy and acceptable. True spiritual service begins when we willingly place our daily existence at His disposal, recognizing that we are bought with a price.

🌱 Application

Understanding that our entire life belongs to God because of His grace changes how we approach our daily routines and choices. When faced with demanding work tasks, physical exhaustion, or frustrating circumstances, we actively yield our hands, eyes, and speech to the Lord by faith, choosing to serve Him right where we are. For instance, when a stressful workplace situation arises that tempts us to react in anger or selfish annoyance, we pause and remember our standing in Christ. Rather than allowing our physical reactions to be driven by fleshly impulse, we present our bodies to God as instruments of righteousness, responding with patience, quiet diligence, and grace toward others.

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom. The rest of the plan was kept secret by God and revealed in the perfect time to our apostle, Paul, who wrote the remaining details of God’s plan to restore the heavens under Christ through the agency of the Body of Christ. That in me FIRST

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
