Romans 12 (Part 3): Gifts and the Body of Christ

Passage: Rom.12:3-8

Scripture Focus:

"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith." (Rom.12:3)

Today's Lesson

Believers are called to maintain a balanced, sober view of themselves within the local assembly and the broader body of Christ. Paul cautions against spiritual pride, reminding us that any capacity or function we have is a gift received through grace. True humility is not self-deprecation; rather, it is recognizing our total dependence on God and seeing ourselves accurately through the lens of His word.

Just as a physical body consists of many distinct members, each carrying out a specific role, so it is in Christ. No single believer possesses every spiritual gift, nor is any member independent of the others. We belong to one another, and our individual functions are designed to complement, support, and strengthen the entire body rather than elevate personal ambition.

God has distributed varying gifts according to His grace, ranging from teaching and exhorting to giving, ruling, and showing mercy. The instruction for each function is straightforward: we are to exercise our gifts with simplicity, diligence, and cheerfulness. When we serve faithfully within our God-given capacity without envy or self-promotion, the peace and unity of the church are preserved.

🌱 Application

Recognizing our place in the body of Christ helps us approach church fellowship and Christian service with humility and purpose. When serving alongside other believers who possess different strengths or talents, we resist the temptation to compare ourselves or seek personal recognition. Instead, we focus on faithfully using whatever opportunity or capacity God has entrusted to us to encourage those around us. For example, if our strength lies in behind-the-scenes practical support or offering quiet words of encouragement, we carry out those tasks cheerfully and without complaint. By valuing the contributions of others and performing our own role with diligence, we actively foster unity and reflect the grace of God to those around us.

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom. The rest of the plan was kept secret by God and revealed in the perfect time to our apostle, Paul, who wrote the remaining details of God’s plan to restore the heavens under Christ through the agency of the Body of Christ. That in me FIRST

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
