The Journey So Far: Understanding Our Identity in Romans
Over the past few weeks, our walk through Paul’s epistle to the Romans has built a deep, unshakeable foundation for our faith. Rather than scattered moral lessons, Paul presents a systematic revelation of God’s grace—taking us step-by-step from ruined sinners to fully justified, secure sons and daughters in Christ.
If you are joining us or reflecting on where we have been, here is the big picture of our spiritual growth and learning journey so far:
1. From Condemnation to Free Justification (Romans 1–3)
We began in the dark reality of human lostness. Paul proved that neither Gentile culture nor Jewish religious performance could produce righteousness. The verdict was absolute: "There is none righteous, no, not one" (Rom.3:10). But then came the turning point—God’s righteousness revealed apart from the law, offering free justification to any sinner through faith in Christ's shed blood (Rom.3:21-26).
2. Faith Imputed & Standing in Grace (Romans 4–5)
Looking at Abraham, we learned that righteousness is imputed without works (Rom.4:5). We moved from condemnation in Adam into a permanent standing of peace, hope, and reigning grace in Jesus Christ (Rom.5:1, 17-21).
3. Liberty, Identity, and Eternal Security (Romans 6–8)
Paul then showed us how to live. We were baptized by the Spirit into Christ’s death and resurrection, making us dead to sin and free from the law (Rom.6:6, 14). We discovered that trying to serve God through legal effort only activates the flesh (Rom.7), but life in the Spirit yields complete freedom, joint-heirship with Christ, and the guarantee that nothing can separate us from God's love (Rom.8:1, 38-39).
4. Dispensational Clarity & God’s Righteousness (Romans 9)
Recently, we entered a vital dispensational shift. Paul defended God's righteousness in temporarily setting aside national Israel while opening salvation freely to Gentiles. We saw that Israel’s historical covenant privileges were distinct from our present calling, and that while Israel stumbled trying to earn righteousness by law, we attain true righteousness through faith in Christ alone (Rom.9:31-32).
The Big Picture
Everything has been laying a systematic foundation: from lost sinners to justified believers, from bondage under sin and the law to liberty in Christ, and now understanding how God deals dispensationally with Israel and the Body of Christ today.
As we move into Romans 10, keep resting in this glorious truth: your standing with God is complete, secure, and rooted entirely in His grace!
