Romans 9 (Part 4): The Stumblingstone and Faith

"As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved." (Rom.9:25)

Today's Lesson

Paul concludes Romans 9 by proving from Old Testament prophecy that God always intended to extend His mercy beyond national boundaries. Quoting Hosea and Isaiah, the apostle demonstrates that Gentiles, who were once not recognised as God's people, would be called sons of the living God. Conversely, though the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, only a remnant would be saved. God's prophetic word anticipated the setting aside of national Israel due to persistent rebellion, making way for a new work where Gentiles enter into spiritual blessing without becoming proselytes to Israel's kingdom program.

This closing section highlights a striking dispensational reality: Gentiles, who did not follow after righteousness, have attained to righteousness through faith. Meanwhile, Israel, who followed after the law of righteousness, did not attain to it. Why? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. They stumbled at that stumblingstone, Jesus Christ Himself. Israel insisted on establishing their own righteous standing through legal performance, rejecting Christ's finished work. Today, under the dispensation of grace, Christ remains a rock of offence to self-righteous performance, but whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed.

Our complete righteousness is received by faith in Christ alone, completely independent of legal performance or national privilege.

Righteousness is attained exclusively by faith in Christ, whereas attempting to earn standing through law works leads to spiritual ruin. (Rom.9:31-32)

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom. That in me FIRST

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
