Under the law, commandments were written on tables of stone as negative prohibitions against harming a neighbour. Under the dispensation of grace, God's love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, providing an inward motivation that exceeds the external demands of the law. When a believer walks after the Spirit and operates in divine love, they naturally fulfil the righteousness of the law without being under its legal yoke. (Rom.12:17) Today's Lesson The final section of Romans 12 addresses how the believer responds to personal injury, conflict, and opposition. Naturally, the human heart seeks retaliation when wronged; however, grace establishes an entirely different principle. We are instructed to recompense no man evil for evil, but rather to conduct ourselves with integrity and honesty before all men. As far as it depends upon us, we are called to live peaceably with everyone, maintaining a testimony that reflects the character of God. Crucially, refusing to retaliate is not an act of weak compromise or passive endurance forced by self-effort. It is an act of deep trust in God’s righteous authority. (Rom.8:18) Today's Lesson Having established our identity as joint-heirs with Christ, Paul addresses the present reality of suffering in a fallen world. As sons of God, our current trials do not signal divine abandonment or displeasure. Rather, Paul urges us to view temporal hardship through the lens of eternity. The present sufferings of this life are entirely outweighed by the eternal glory that will be unveiled in us at the resurrection. All of creation groans under the bondage of corruption, eagerly awaiting the manifestation of the sons of God. (Rom.2:11) Today's Lesson In the opening movement of Romans chapter two, the apostle Paul addresses the moralist who stands in self-righteous condemnation of others. Having exposed the blatant wickedness of the pagan world, Paul turns the mirror toward those who consider themselves morally superior. The central doctrinal truth established here is that God's judgment is according to truth, fully impartial, and uninfluenced by human pretense or external privilege. When an individual condemns another for wrongdoing while secretly or openly committing similar offences, they store up wrath against themselves. God does not measure righteousness by human comparison or religious heritage. His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering are designed to lead man to repentance, not to foster presumption or false security. Furthermore, God will render to every man accord...

In Acts 21, Paul joined in a purification rite at the Temple—not because he needed it for salvation, but to show respect and accommodation toward his fellow Jews who were zealous for the Law. He did this to quiet rumors and to build bridges, while never compromising the truth of the gospel of grace. Paul’s act reminds us that accommodation is not compromise. He remained steadfast in the doctrine revealed to him—that we are saved by grace through faith, apart from works of the Law. Yet he was patient, humble, and willing to walk alongside others in their journey, showing them respect while gently pointing them to the liberty we have in Christ.
