Romans 13 (Part 2): Love as the Fulfilling of the Law
Part 2 of 3 • ⏱️ 2-Min Read Passage: Rom.13:8-10
Scripture Focus:
"Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law." (Rom.13:8)
Today's Lesson
The Apostle Paul transitions from our civil duties to our personal relationships with others under grace. While believers are instructed to pay all legal debts and obligations promptly, there is one ongoing debt that can never be fully settled: the obligation to love one another. Under the law, commandments were written on tables of stone as negative prohibitions against harming a neighbour. Under the dispensation of grace, God's love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, providing an inward motivation that exceeds the external demands of the law.
When a believer walks after the Spirit and operates in divine love, they naturally fulfil the righteousness of the law without being under its legal yoke. True love produces no ill will, no deceit, and no harm toward another person. Therefore, love is not a replacement for divine righteousness, but rather the actual expression and fulfillment of it in daily life. Rather than striving to keep a list of legalistic rules to earn God's favour, the believer relies on Christ's life within to produce genuine care for others.
🌱 Application
Believers walk in liberty when they allow the love of Christ to direct their daily interactions rather than relying on self-righteous effort. You apply this truth by recognizing that your standing in grace releases you from serving self and empowers you to actively seek the good of those around you. For instance, when a coworker acts unfairly or speaks harsh words in the workplace, choosing to respond with patience and restraint instead of retaliation demonstrates the love of God in action, fulfilling the heart of God's righteous standard through Christ.
