Romans 14 (Part 3): Avoiding Stumbling blocks and Walking Charitably

Part 3 of 4 • ⏱️ 2-Min Read Passage: Romans 14:13-18

Scripture Focus:

"Let us not judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." (Rom.14:13)

Today's Lesson

The doctrine of grace replaces the policing of external rituals with the internal rule of love and charity. While the believer possesses full liberty in Christ regarding things like food and drink, love demands that we govern our freedom so that we do not cause a weaker brother to stumble. Nothing is unclean of itself in this dispensation, yet if a brother regards something as unclean, to him it is unclean. Exercising personal freedom without regard for the conscience of another is a failure to walk charitably. Christ died for every believer, and destroying a brother over matters of food or non-essential practices contradicts the very spirit of grace. True spiritual maturity is demonstrated when we willingly limit the exercise of our rights for the spiritual welfare of others. The kingdom of God is not a matter of outward regulations regarding eating and drinking, but is defined by righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. When we serve Christ by prioritizing spiritual harmony and building up fellow saints over selfishly insisting on our liberties, we are accepted of God and approved among men.

🌱 Application

Living under grace means our personal freedoms must always be balanced by genuine concern for the spiritual well-being of those around us. When planning social gatherings or family events where food, drink, or entertainment choices might trouble the conscience of a fellow believer, we should exercise thoughtful restraint. For instance, if hosting a church dinner where a brother struggles with certain dietary customs or lifestyle choices, opting for a menu that accommodates everyone prevents unnecessary offense. By willingly setting aside our personal preferences in love, we foster true unity and reflect the character of Christ within the local assembly.
