Romans 16 (Part 3): Faithful Companions
Part 3 of 4 • ⏱️ 2-Min ReadPassage: Romans 16:21-24
Scripture Focus:
"Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you." (Rom.16:21)
Today's Lesson
The Apostle Paul concludes his epistle by weaving in heartfelt personal greetings from his faithful travelling companions and coworkers in the ministry. These verses highlight a vital New Testament reality: the propagation of sound doctrine and the grace of God is never a solitary endeavour, but a shared labour among brethren knit together in the truth. Timothy, described as Paul's true son in the faith and steadfast workfellow, stands alongside Jewish kinsmen and devoted believers whose names are permanently recorded in the inspired text of scripture. Even Tertius, the scribe who physically penned the words of the letter from Paul's dictation, takes a brief moment to insert his own personal greeting in verse twenty-two. Furthermore, the inclusion of Gaius, mine host, and Erastus the chamberlain of the city, demonstrates that God's calling transcends diverse social standings, drawing all sorts of men into active fellowship under the gospel of grace. These greetings remind us that the body of Christ functions through real people collaborating in real-world contexts, supporting one another, and taking personal ownership of the work of the ministry. Every labour done in fellowship around sound doctrine matters eternally, anchored by the rich assurance of divine grace pronounced upon them all.
🌱 Application
Recognising the value of shared labour in the gospel encourages us to embrace our part within the local body of believers without seeking personal glory. Consider a scenario in your daily workplace, family, or assembly where a project or shared responsibility requires teamwork and behind-the-scenes effort that might go largely unnoticed by the wider public. Instead of desiring individual recognition or growing weary of supporting others, you apply this passage by viewing your contribution as a faithful co-labourer alongside fellow believers, serving with a glad and cooperative heart. By appreciating the unique roles others play and faithfully executing your own responsibilities to the best of your ability, you cultivate a harmonious environment of mutual support, strengthening the corporate witness of grace in everyday life.
