Romans 13 (Part 3): Putting On the Armour of Light

Part 3 of 3 • ⏱️ 2-Min Read Passage: Rom.13:11-14

Scripture Focus:

"The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light." (Rom.13:12)

Today's Lesson

Paul concludes this chapter by calling believers to urgent spiritual alertness in light of God's dispensational timeline. Knowing the time and understanding our current standing in grace means recognizing that our full redemption, the resurrection and glorification of our bodies, is closer now than when we first believed. The present evil age is described as night, but the approaching day of the Lord's return brightens our perspective. Because of whom we are in Christ, we are urged to cast off the shameful practices associated with darkness and adorn ourselves with the spiritual protection of God's truth.

Walking honestly as children of light means rejecting the fleshly indulgences of the world, such as strife, envying, and excess. Instead of making provision for the flesh to fulfil its sinful desires, the believer is instructed to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. This is not a matter of trying to earn salvation, as that is a settled matter through justification, but rather actively yielding to Christ's life and allowing His character to be manifested in our daily conduct. By relying on our position in Him, we walk cleanly and purposefully in a modern world filled with spiritual darkness.

🌱 Application

Understanding that our ultimate redemption draws near motivates us to live deliberately for Christ each day. You apply this truth by guarding your mind and environment against influences that feed fleshly desires, choosing instead to align your focus with your identity in Him. For example, when tempted to engage in workplace gossip or heated disputes that cater to pride and division, you consciously choose to put on Christ by remaining quiet, seeking peace, and displaying the character of the Lord Jesus rather than giving in to impulse.
