Romans 2: The Fallacy of Self-Righteousness

Scripture Focus:

"For there is no respect of persons with God." (Rom.2:11)

Today's Lesson

Paul turns his attention from the openly ungodly to the moralist and religious hypocrite. The natural temptation when reading of extreme wickedness is to sit in judgment, assuming personal morality grants special favour with God. However, God judges according to truth, not outward appearances or religious privilege.

Possessing or knowing the law does not justify anyone; only perfect obedience can satisfy its demands. Because no individual keeps the law perfectly, relying on personal works or heritage only increases condemnation. God examines the secrets of the heart, exposing hidden sins that religious performance attempts to cover.

Furthermore, true circumcision is not an external, physical ritual, but a spiritual work performed in the heart by the Spirit. External adherence without internal reality is meaningless before God. The law was given to reveal sin, not to establish human righteousness. Whether operating under the written law or guided by conscience, every individual falls short of God's perfect standard. Salvation cannot be earned through moral achievement, legal observance, or birthright. Moral religious standing provides no refuge from divine judgment. Every mouth is stopped, placing all humanity on equal footing in desperate need of God's grace.

God's judgment is completely impartial, stripping away all religious merit so that salvation can only be received as a free gift through faith, apart from legal works.

It’s not always obvious. The weaker brother isn’t the one who skips church or struggles with prayer. He’s often the one who looks the most committed. 1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
