Master and Servants

Scripture Focus:

"But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." (Rom.6:17-18)

Today's Lesson

Being under grace rather than the law never grants permission to indulge in sin. Paul confronts this misconception by pointing out an unchangeable law of allegiance: you yield obedience to whichever master you choose to serve. Submission to sin leads strictly to death, whereas yielding to God produces practical righteousness. Liberty in Christ is not an absence of authority, but a total transfer of ownership.

Believers were once bound to sin, but deliverance came when they yielded heart-obedience to "that form of doctrine" handed down for this present dispensation of grace. Doctrine transforms conduct. When truth is believed and relied upon, and exercised, the chain of sin's authority breaks, placing the believer into the service of righteousness.

Serving the old master produced shameful fruit and earned ultimate ruin. Under grace, serving God yields practical holiness and life. Sin pays strict wages, and that payment is death. Salvation and eternal life can never be earned as wages; they remain the pure, unmerited gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Walk today in the reality of your new Master.

Grace does not promote lawlessness; it changes our servitude from the tyranny of sin to the total ownership of God through Christ.

  • Who I Am: I am made free from sin and set apart as a servant of righteousness unto God.

  • My Walk Today: I yield my daily choices to God's righteousness rather than returning to the bondage of sin.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Rom.6:23)

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom. The rest of the plan was kept secret by God and revealed in the perfect time to our apostle, Paul, who wrote the remaining details of God’s plan to restore the heavens under Christ through the agency of the Body of Christ. That in me FIRST

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
