Romans 3 (Part 2): All the World Guilty Before God

Part 2 of 4 • ⏱️ 2-Min Read

Passage: Romans 3:9-20

Scripture Focus:

"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" (Rom.3:10)

Today's Lesson

Having established that God's faithfulness remains intact despite man's unbelief, Paul now turns to the condition of mankind itself. His conclusion is direct and unavoidable: both Jews and Gentiles are under sin. No group possesses a moral advantage before God. Religious heritage, good intentions, or outward obedience cannot remove the guilt of sin.

To prove this, Paul draws from the Old Testament scriptures. The testimony is consistent. There is none righteous, none that understandeth, and none that seeketh after God. Sin has affected every part of human nature. The throat, tongue, lips, mouth, feet, and mind are all mentioned, demonstrating that man's corruption is not partial but universal.

The purpose of these verses is not merely to expose bad behaviour but to reveal man's true standing before a holy God. The law was never given as a ladder by which sinners could climb into acceptance. Instead, the law exposes sin and makes it known. As Paul concludes, by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in God's sight.

This section removes every ground of self-confidence. Whether religious or irreligious, moral or immoral, all stand equally condemned before God. Every mouth is stopped and all the world becomes guilty before Him. Before the good news of justification can be understood, the reality of man's guilt must first be acknowledged.

🌱 Application

These verses remind us that God does not compare us with other people; He measures us against the standard of perfect righteousness. A believer can avoid the trap of pride by remembering that salvation was never earned through personal merit. Walking in humility means recognising that our standing before God rests entirely upon His grace. For example, when observing the failures of a colleague, neighbour, or family member, instead of feeling superior, we can remember that all humanity shares the same sinful condition and the same need for God's mercy, producing compassion rather than self-righteousness.
