Romans 4 (Part 2): The Promise Is of Faith
Part 2 of 4 • ⏱️ 2-Min Read
Passage: Rom.4:9-15
Scripture Focus:
"For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith." (Rom.4:13)
Today's Lesson
Paul now asks whether the blessedness he just described belongs only to the circumcised. The answer is no, and the timing of Abraham's justification proves it. Abraham believed God and was counted righteous in Genesis 15, but circumcision was not given until Genesis 17, roughly fourteen years later. The seal came after the righteousness, not before it. This order matters because it means Abraham was justified while still uncircumcised, making him the father of all who believe, whether circumcised or not. Circumcision was a seal of a righteousness he already possessed by faith. It added nothing to the credit. Paul then presses further to the promise itself. The promise that Abraham would be heir of the world did not come through the law, which was not given until four hundred and thirty years later. It came through the righteousness of faith. If the inheritance depended on law, faith would be made void and the promise would be of none effect. The law cannot produce heirs. It only works wrath, because where there is no law there is no transgression. Law defines sin and condemns the sinner. It never credits righteousness. So the promise stands on a different footing entirely: it rests on grace, secured to all the seed, not only those of the law but those of the faith of Abraham. The promise is not earned by rule-keeping. It is received by faith in the God who made it.
⚙️ Grace Truth & Identity
The promise of inheritance comes through the righteousness of faith, not through law-keeping, so your standing as an heir rests on God's gracious promise received by faith, entirely apart from your works.
💡 Core Takeaway
The promise was given through the righteousness of faith, not through the law, which only works wrath. (Rom.4:13-15)
💬 For Meditation & Walk
Are you looking to your rule-keeping to secure what God has already promised by grace, or resting in the promise received by faith?
