Romans 3 (Part 1): The Faithfulness of God Despite Human Unbelief

Today's Lesson

Romans 3 begins by addressing an obvious question. If Israel has failed, was there ever any advantage in being a Jew? Paul answers that there was much advantage, chiefly because unto them were committed the oracles of God. God entrusted His written revelation to Israel, giving them a unique position and responsibility.

Yet Israel's privilege did not guarantee obedience. Many were unbelieving, but their unbelief could not cancel God's faithfulness. Paul's answer is clear: God remains true regardless of how people respond to Him. His character is not dependent upon human approval, obedience, or belief. When men fail, God does not fail. When men change, God does not change.

Paul then confronts a dangerous line of reasoning. If man's sin highlights God's righteousness, does that somehow excuse sin? Absolutely not. God remains righteous when He judges sin because His holiness is perfect and His standards never alter. The fact that God can bring good out of evil does not make evil good.

The passage establishes an important doctrinal truth: God's truth stands independent of man's behaviour. Human failure reveals our need, but it never diminishes God's righteousness, justice, or faithfulness. The believer can therefore rest confidently in a God whose promises and character remain constant even when mankind proves unreliable.

🌱 Application

One of the greatest comforts for a believer is knowing that God's faithfulness is not measured by human performance. When circumstances are confusing, when others disappoint us, or when we recognise our own shortcomings, we can still trust what God has said. Walking by faith means allowing His word to remain the final authority rather than our feelings or experiences. For example, if workplace pressures create anxiety about the future, a believer can consciously choose to trust God's truth rather than fearful thoughts, remembering that the same God who remains true despite human failure is fully trustworthy in every situation of daily life.

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom. It’s not always obvious. The weaker brother isn’t the one who skips church or struggles with prayer. He’s often the one who looks the most committed. He avoids meat, steers clear of certain days, and holds tight to rules that make him feel holy. He’s sincere. He’s serious. And in his own mind, he’s strong. But Paul says otherwise.
