Justified Freely by His Grace

Scripture Focus:

"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:" (Rom.3:24)

Today's Lesson

Romans 3 establishes the ultimate equality of all humanity under sin. Both Jew and Gentile stand condemned before God, for none is righteous on their own merits. The law was never given to grant righteousness; rather, its purpose is to stop every mouth and bring knowledge of sin. By the deeds of the law, no flesh can be justified in His sight.

Yet, where human effort fails completely, divine grace intervenes. God has manifested His righteousness apart from the law, witnessed by the law and the prophets. This righteousness is given unto all and upon all them that believe, without distinction or national favour. Since all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, justification cannot be earned or achieved through religious duty.

Instead, justification is given freely by God's grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God set forth Jesus Christ to be a propitiation through faith in His blood. This sacrifice demonstrates God's justice, declaring Him to be both perfectly just and the justifier of the one who believes in Jesus. Boasting is entirely excluded by the law of faith. We are declared righteous not by works, but through personal trust in the accomplished cross work of Christ.

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
