Passage: Romans 7:14-25

Scripture Focus:

"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin." (Rom.7:24-25)

Today's Lesson

The apostle details a vital struggle that every believer recognizes: the ongoing warfare between the renewed mind and indwelling sin residing within physical flesh. The law of God is spiritual, holy, and good, yet the believer remains in a corruptible body where sin still dwells. This passage does not describe an unsaved individual trying to keep the law, nor does it present a normal pattern for Christian living under grace. Instead, it exposes the complete inability of the flesh to produce righteousness, even when a person possesses a sincere desire to obey God.

Trying to use the law as a rule of life produces frustration because the flesh possesses no spiritual power to execute good intentions. The believer discovers another law at work within their members, warring against the law of their mind and bringing them into captivity to the law of sin. The honest realization of this total weakness leads to the urgent cry for deliverance. Relief does not come through increased personal effort, self-discipline, or legalistic observance. Absolute victory over the power of indwelling sin comes solely through Jesus Christ our Lord. Deliverance is a finished work accomplished through Christ, freeing the believer from relying on self-effort and directing their complete reliance toward the power of His grace.

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
