“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Rom.1:16)

Today’s Lesson

The opening of Romans sets forth the distinct character and divine authority of the gospel of God. Paul identifies himself as a servant and a called apostle, separated unto a message promised afore by the prophets concerning Jesus Christ our Lord. This foundational truth establishes that salvation rests entirely upon the person and completed work of Christ—His resurrection declaring Him to be the Son of God with power.

In this present dispensation of grace, the gospel operates as the absolute power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes. It does not demand legalistic performance or ceremonial observance; rather, God’s righteousness is revealed from faith to faith. The believer stands fully justified not through human merit or striving, but through placing total reliance upon the blood atonement offered at Calvary.

Furthermore, Paul demonstrates the heart of a true minister by desiring spiritual fellowship with the saints to impart mutual encouragement. The apostle recognized a solemn debtor’s obligation to preach this uncompromised truth to all people without distinction. Resting in God’s righteousness means recognizing that our acceptance before Him is completely settled by grace through faith.

Understanding that the gospel is the pure power of God transforms how we navigate our daily assurance and identity in Christ. When faced with personal shortcomings or accusing thoughts, we must actively fix our minds on the reality that our righteous standing before God relies entirely on Christ’s finished work rather than our own fluctuating feelings or performance. In practical terms, when dealing with unexpected pressure at work or strained interactions with family, we choose to respond out of the stability of God’s unmerited favour rather than reacting out of anxiety or self-vindication. By resting in His grace, our daily conduct naturally reflects the peaceful confidence of a heart anchored securely in the truth.

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom.
