Romans 7: Freedom from the Law's Jurisdiction

Passage: Romans 7:1-6 

Scripture Focus:

"Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God." (Rom.7:4)

Today's Lesson

The Law exercises authority over a person only as long as he lives. To explain this principle, the Apostle Paul uses the law of marriage. A married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is alive. If he dies, she is completely released from that binding covenant and is free to marry another without committing adultery.

This legal truth illustrates the profound reality of our union with Jesus Christ. Through our identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection, our old man died. Because we died with Christ, the Law no longer holds any legal claim or jurisdiction over us. We did not leave the Law by modifying it or trying harder to fulfill its demands; we were discharged from it because death cancelled the contract.

The purpose of this complete severance from the Law is spiritual union. We are now married to another—the resurrected Saviour. Under the Law, the passions of sin operated in our members to produce fruit unto death. But now, delivered from the binding mandate of legal performance, we serve in the newness of the Spirit rather than the oldness of the letter. True holiness and acceptable fruit unto God never stem from legalistic effort, but flow naturally from our vital, loving union with Christ.

⚙️ Grace Truth & Identity

Through identification with Christ in His death, I am completely released from the Law's jurisdiction and united to the resurrected Saviour. My standing and service before God flow entirely from grace, empowering me to serve in the newness of the Spirit.

Believers are dead to the Law through Christ so they may be united to the resurrected Lord and bring forth fruit unto God. (Rom.7:4)

Chosen before the foundation of the world

God’s entire redemption plan was determined long before the world was made. God knows the end from the beginning as we read in Isaiah 46:10. However, it is interesting how we can distinguish our grace doctrine from other dispensations based on what was prophesied versus what was kept secret. God revealed relevant parts of the plan systematically and slowly through dispensations. The majority of the plan to restore the earth was revealed through the prophets and unto Israel. Israel will be used to bring earth back in subjection under Christ in the Millennial Kingdom. That in me FIRST

1 Tim.1:15-16 ... that in me first ... The key word here is 'FIRST'. First in what? —Salvation of course! But how could this be since God had shown mercy to save many others before Paul? Paul was certainly not the first person to ever be saved! No, but we must understand that Paul's conversion started a brand new 'mystery' program, the program of grace, and he was the first to be saved into this new program. Paul is the first member immersed into the Body of Christ. He was divinely selected by the risen Christ to become the apostle to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15; Gal.1:1). Christ would reveal to him the secrets of this new dispensation (Eph.3:1-5) and provide him the gospel of grace (Gal.1:11-12).
