Romans 3 (Part 3): The Righteousness of God Without the Law
Part 3 of 4 • ⏱️ 2-Min Read
Passage: Romans 3:21-26
Scripture Focus:
“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” (Rom.3:24)
Today’s Lesson
Romans 3:21 opens with two words that change everything: “But now”. After proving the whole world guilty under the law, Paul reveals that the righteousness of God is manifested “without the law”. This righteousness is not earned, achieved or improved by religious effort. The law and the prophets witness to it, yet it stands apart from them.
Verse 22 tells us how it is received: by the faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe. Notice “there is no difference”. The same verdict that stopped every mouth in verse 19 now brings the same remedy to everyone. Verse 23 repeats the problem: all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Verse 24 is the heart of the passage. Believers are justified freely, meaning as a gift, by His grace. Justified means declared righteous before God. The ground of this is redemption, the price paid in Christ Jesus. Verse 25 adds that God set Him forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood. Propitiation is the satisfying of God’s righteous demand against sin, and it was settled in His blood.
Verse 26 shows God is never careless about sin. He declares His righteousness, “that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”
🌱 Application
The believer stands righteous before God because Christ paid the price and God declared it so, not because of anything we have done. By faith, rest your standing on the finished work of Christ and stop measuring your acceptance by your performance. Picture a believer who snaps at a colleague during a stressful week and then feels unfit to pray that evening. Instead of trying to win God’s approval back, they remember that they were justified freely by His grace, thank Him for the blood that already satisfied God, and apologise to the colleague the next morning from a settled heart. Their peace with God was never resting on their behaviour in the first place.

Tomorrow in Romans 3, we see that since righteousness is a gift received by faith, all boasting is excluded.
