Romans 7 (Part 2): The Purpose and Holiness of the Law

"What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet." (Rom.7:7)
Today's Lesson
The Apostle Paul anticipates a crucial question: if believers are dead to the Law, does that mean the Law itself is sinful? The answer is an emphatic absolute no. The Law is not the problem; it is holy, just, and good. Its divine design is not to impart righteousness or produce holy living, but to act as a mirror that exposes the true nature of sin.
Before the commandment came to Paul’s conscience, sin lay dormant and unrecognised. But when the Law said, "Thou shalt not covet," sin seized the opportunity. Operating through the commandment, sin revived, produced all manner of evil desire in the heart, and brought spiritual death. The Law did not cause the sin; rather, it exposed the hidden rebellion already lurking within human nature.
This reveals the primary office of the Law under God’s design. Sin is so deceitful that it disguises its true villainy. God introduced the commandment so that sin, by using a good and holy thing to produce death, might be exposed in its full gravity. The Law slays all human self-righteousness. It leaves no room for boasting, forcing us to realise that our flesh is completely bankrupt and utterly incapable of keeping God’s holy standard.

I recognise that God’s holy Law was given to expose human helplessness, not to justify me. Standing in grace, I no longer look to legal commandments for victory, but rely entirely on my deadness to sin and life in Christ.
